Games Industry Unites to Promote Messages Against COVID-19
The popularity of online gaming has grown dramatically over the past few weeks as it’s become the latest tool being used to keep people inside to help fight against Coronavirus.
The Government have partnered up with leading UK video gaming companies to make ‘Stay At Home, Save Lives’ message appear on screens of these popular games Candy Crush Saga, Sniper Elite 4, Dirt Rally 2.0 and Farm Heroes through geotargeting technology.
Game developers at King have created an image to capture the attention of players and parents to encourage social distancing in some of their social media posts. They have predicted millions of people play their mobile games so the message will be seen by many. The firm has also donated 230 digital advertising screens to carry the coronavirus message.
Rebellion, creators of Strange Brigade and Sniper Elite, will be displaying the message on a screen before gameplay. Players a link to the Government’s website containing more information about the virus on the page.
And those who play Dirt Rally 2.0, created by Codemasters, should see the in-game ad pop up as they are taking advantage of the built-in ability to display ads.
At Akolyte, we will be promoting ways people can continue to improve at their chosen game in a safe environment and at a distance. We’ll also be working closely with the Government to ensure that all of our messaging is positioned as best as possible to get the message out to people.
By reinforcing the Government’s message, the Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden says:
“It is absolutely vital that we all follow the simple government advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives. I’m delighted to see the UK’s brilliant video games industry stepping up to strongly reinforce this message to gamers across the UK.”
